In Honor of Dr. George Tiller, Show the Love

Posted on 18. May, 2010 by in news

Almost one year ago, Dr. George Tiller was assassinated while serving as an usher in the foyer of his church in Wichita by an anti-choice extremist. Dr. Tiller was one of only a handful of doctors in the United States willing to perform abortions later in pregnancy, a much-needed service, and he was a target for anti-choice threats and harassment throughout his career.

While we would like to say this was an isolated incident of terrorist violence, we can’t. Since 1977, the National Abortion Federation has documented more than 6,200 incidents of clinic violence. Doctors, nurses, counselors, and other staff at abortion clinics go to work every day knowing that today, they may be the target of anti-choice violence. They keep coming back because they know that the services they provide are essential to women’s liberty and they know that, in the words of Dr. Tiller, “for women, abortion is a matter of survival.” Yet their work often goes unheralded.

This year, on the one-year anniversary of Dr. Tiller’s murder, the TEA Fund wants to recognize these brave women and men on the front lines in the fight for reproductive rights. The TEA Fund works with 14 area clinics, and the doctors and staff at these clinics provide a service that is invaluable to women. This Valentine’s Day, with the help of your support, we raised enough funds to “show the love” to two area clinics. On this tragic anniversary, help us raise enough funds to show all our of area providers how much their work means to us.

For every $75 donated, the TEA Fund will deliver a handmade card, flowers, and a basket of goodies to an area clinic’s staff on May 31st (the anniversary of Dr. Tiller’s murder). If you can’t donate the entire $75 yourself, forward this email to a couple friends! Your donation will do triple duty, showing these providers how much you care and giving a TEA Fund client the financial assistance she needs to make a choice she wouldn’t have access to without your help. The TEA Fund will also donate a portion of the proceeds from this campaign to the George Tiller Memorial Abortion Fund. Without providers there would be no choice. Show North Texas abortion providers you appreciate their work.

Join us for Gaybingo Fabuloso! on 24 April to play bingo and raise money and awareness for the TEA Fund and social/health services for the GLBTQ community!

What is it?

Gaybingo is more than a series of number-calling bingo games. Gaybingo Dallas is hosted by two of Dallas’ funniest ladies, Kerri Oki and Vanna T. Brown, and features the BVD’s (Bingo Verifying Divas). Each GayBingo features a theme to dress for, special guests, surprise entertainment, a raffle and of course 15 fun bingo games — but NOT ordinary bingo games! Check out the Gaybingo YouTube channel for a taste of what it’s about.

Gaybingo is a monthly event put on by the Dallas Resource Center, which provides health, social, and community services for GLBTQ people and for families living with HIV and AIDS. Every month, they partner with a “50/50″ group — another local community group that helps to publicize Gaybingo, helps run the event, and earns funds from the proceeds of the raffle at the event. For April (the 24th) the TEA Fund is that partner!

How can you participate?

1. Make a donation of $26.50 to the TEA Fund through PayPal and the TEA Fund will provide you with a ticket to Gaybingo on April 24th. Just visit our Donate page and click Donate Now to make the donation. (If you’d rather pay by check, no problem! Contact Sulan Chang, TEA Fund President, at sulan@teafund.org.) NOTE: YOU MUST BE 21+ TO PLAY GAYBINGO.

2. Volunteer your time to help work at Gaybingo. The TEA Fund needs 12 volunteers, and we’re still looking for a couple more. This will take place April 24th at the Rose Room, and volunteers must arrive no later than 4:30 pm to help set up/sell raffle tickets, and stay to help clean up after the event. If you want to volunteer, please contact Meredith at meredithmcq@gmail.com to sign up!

3. Buy $1 raffle tickets at Gaybingo. Heck, we can even sell you some in advance (contact maia@teafund.org)! The TEA Fund is the beneficiary of the raffle (splitting the take with the winner), so you get a chance to win cash for supporting reproductive justice!

Show the Love! Campaign

Posted on 11. Feb, 2010 by in news

This V-Day, turn that commercial frenzy into support for women and providers. The TEA Fund works with 14 area clinics, and the doctors and staff at these clinics provide a service that is invaluable to women. Yet their work often goes unheralded, not to mention the stigma our society places on abortion and the serious persecution and daily difficulties providers can face from abortion opponents.

Without providers there would be no choice. Show North Texas providers you appreciate their work.

For every $75 donated, the TEA Fund will deliver a handmade card, flowers, and a dozen bagels to an area clinic for Valentine’s Day. (If you can’t donate the entire $75 yourself, share this with a couple friends!) Your donation will do double duty, showing these providers how much you care–and giving a woman the financial assistance she needs to make a choice she wouldn’t have access to without your help.

Pledge-a-Protester for Roe Raises $1,649!

Posted on 07. Feb, 2010 by in news

Our Pledge-a-Protester campaign in January put $4.34 on each of the 380 protesters who came out, raising a total of $1649 to help women.

Thanks for making reproductive rights a reality by turning the mean tactics of protesters into financial assistance for women who really need it!

If you missed this campaign, we’ll run another Pledge-a-Protester in April. Subscribe to the TEA Fund’s newsletter to make sure you hear about it.
