Self-Care Tips for the 88th TX Legislative Session

Self-Care Tips for the 88th TX Legislative Session
January 26, 2023 Danielle Longueville

The 88th Texas Legislative Session runs January 10th to May 29th, 2023. There is a lot to be discussed this session, including legislation regarding access to Reproductive Health Care. We can already feel the tension building.

As a result, we’re steadily thinking of ways to practice self-care amidst the stress and anguish that’s to come. Here are a few ways you can start practicing self-care immediately.

Drink water! Stay hydrated to stay loud and proud about abortion access.

Drink Water

One of the most important elements humans need to stay alive and thriving is water. It makes up 60-70% of our bodies. When we stay hydrated, we’re able to stay loud and proud about abortion access. We recommend investing in a water bottle of your choice, preferably one that is BPA-free, so that you can stay hydrated everywhere, anywhere.

Get Plenty of Rest

Creating a sustainable activist life requires one of the most essential tools for activism: Rest. Rest is often referred to as a radical form of protest, especially in a society that rarely ceases to demand labor from us. Rest can come in many forms! A quick cat nap in bed in between chores, taking a step outside to enjoy the sunshine, or simply taking a moment to take a few deep breaths. Take rest when and where you can.

Set Limits on Social Media Scrolling: social media and the act of Doom Scrolling can have a negative impact on your stress and anxiety levels. Set Limits on Social Media Scrolling

Social media and the act of Doom Scrolling can have a negative impact on your stress and anxiety levels. Try to set cutoff times, or maximum lengths of time spent on socials before stepping away to take care of you and your psyche.  Designate a place in your home where your devices can stay out of reach, so you can physically distance yourself from opportunities to scroll. Take time to reflect in a journal, meditate or move your body in a way that you enjoy most.
