Texas Abortion Funds Reject SB 31: A Fake Fix That Puts More Texans In Danger

Texas abortion funds stand united in opposition to Senate Bill 31, a bill falsely marketed as a solution to Texas’ deadly abortion ban, but it actually reinforces the same dangerous legal barriers that continue to harm pregnant Texans, while revitalizing pre-Roe laws that would criminalize abortion funds and other people who help Texans access out-of-state abortions.

Abortion funds in Texas know firsthand the real consequences of Texas’ abortion ban—we hear from people every day who are scared and left without options because politicians are playing games with their lives. SB 31 does not change that reality.

SB 31 is a political distraction, not a real solution to Texas’ current reproductive health crisis caused by the state’s ban on abortions. This bill does nothing to fix the suffering caused by the lack of abortion access. It will not stop hospitals from prioritizing legal risks over patient health nor fully shield doctors from prosecution. It does nothing to ensure Texans can get the care they need. This bill only exists to provide anti-abortion politicians cover for their decision to ban abortion, while still keeping care inaccessible.

What SB 31 Really Does

  • Leaves the legal gray area intact, meaning more Texans will suffer while waiting for permission to receive care.

  • Adds more red tape, forcing physicians to prioritize fetal survival even when it puts the patient at risk.

  • Revives dangerous pre-Roe abortion laws, which could be weaponized to criminalize people seeking abortion care and those who support them, including abortion funds and practical support organizations.

We demand that the Texas Legislature reject SB 31. Texans need real access, not legal sleight of hand.
