Our HIstory
Founder, gretchen dyer.
Educator, Feminist, Founder.
Gretchen Dyer, founder of Texas Equal Access Fund, started our organization in 2005 while teaching at the University of North Texas.
Gretchen taught feminist theory for two years at UNT before mobilizing a group of students to fund abortion access for members of their community.
It started with a House Party.
Initially launched in November, 2004 at a house party in Highland Park, TEA Fund’s first fundraiser raised $475. By early 2005, TEA Fund was an official non-profit organization that was ready to start the work, and quickly.
Over the next several years, TEA Fund’s area of service and number of clients would continue to grow, and rapidly so. It was apparent from the beginning that our work was so needed in our communities.
In 2020, our TEAm launched the TEA Fund Text Line, creating a quick and easy route for Texans seeking abortion access to get connected to the services and resources they need.
To this day, our number of clients connected with and served are in the several thousands, and growing at record-breaking speeds.
In 2022, following the Dobbs Decision which led to the overturning of Roe v. Wade, we Texans were faced with harmful trigger bans, thus banning abortion altogether in Texas. Our TEAm was forced to act quickly, funding as many in-state abortion as possible before it became illegal.
In the months that followed, TEA Fund, and many other states facing the same abortion ban policies, were forced to hault in-state abortion funding altogether. In an instant, our TEAm was left helpless, but not hopeless.
Since then, our TEAm has expanded to create a stronger, louder foundation from which to serve our community. In 2023, TEA Fund grew by a strong and passionate few, who were eager to help bring our new version of support services back to the fold.
Today, our TEAm members reflect the beauty and diversity that’s found within our community.
